Routledge Handbook on Men, Masculinities and Organizations: Theories, Practices and Futures of Organizing: Routledge International Handbooks

Editat de Jeff Hearn, Kadri Aavik, David L. Collinson, Anika Thym
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 24 noi 2023
This Handbook provides new theoretical and empirical insights into men, men’s practices and masculinities across many kinds of organizations and forms of organizing. Most mainstream studies of organizations, leadership and management do not seem to notice they are often talking a lot about men and masculinities. The Handbook challenges this general tendency to avoid gendering men by bringing together a range of theoretical and methodological approaches that:
  • engage with not only formal organizations, such as businesses and state organizations, but also processes of organizing within and beyond organizations;
  • address emergent and future issues on men, masculinities and organizations, such as tech masculinities, men’s emotions, sexualities and violences, animal advocacy and environmental issues, and men and masculinities in pandemics.
Targeted at scholars, policymakers, practitioners and students interested in links between men, masculinities, organizations and organizing, this landmark Handbook is an invaluable resource for those working in and beyond such fi elds as gender studies, organization, leadership and management studies, political science, sociology, social and public policy, and social movement studies.

Recenzii

"It’s ironic that a world dominated by men should have so comparatively little theoretical and empirical research that casts a critical eye on masculinity in organizations. Fortunately, this edited collection provides a robust and thorough overview of that lacuna and is filled with star contributors and sharp contemporary analyses. If you are new to the academic literature then this is the book to start with; if you are familiar with the literature then there isn’t a better update."
Keith Grint, Emeritus Professor, Warwick Business School, UK
"The importance of gender studies from a critical perspective is needed more than ever as scholars find alternative ways to resist societal and organizational structures of domination and exploitation. This international resource is a must read for anyone seeking to interrogate the relationship between men and masculinities. The collection journeys from classic theories of masculine domination and ways of organizing against hegemonic masculinity to emerging accounts of contemporary and global masculinities and the implications for organizations and organizing."
Alison Pullen, Macquarie University,  Australia
"The handbook links men and masculinities with social structures represented by diverse organizations and practices of organizing. Such perspective provides an important and invaluable angle of analysis contrasting with popular approaches reducing masculinity to individual traits or some essential personality type. Authors and editors ensure their comprehensive approach is reflected critically and engage in conceptual dialogue on how the different perspectives can be theorized. Informal and formal practices – imprinted in the construction of organizations or organizational settings shaping practice - form the pivotal perspective bravely engaging in deconstructing power relations, hegemonies, or crises. Multiple takes on analyses collected in the handbook offer vivid portraits of organizations and organizing as gendered practices for both students and readers new to the field and scholars engaged in critical approaches to masculinities across disciplines and spaces. Following this way of theorizing is a joy to read."
Iva Šmídová, Associate Professor, Masaryk University, Czech Republic
"I was literally blown away by the remarkable set of chapters that powerfully reveal the magnitude of the effects of men’s practices and masculinities across the globe. The volume draws from multi-disciplines to reveal the relationships between men, masculinities and organizing and organizations. It is an excellent resource for understanding contemporary challenges like persistent gender divisions in labor markets, the gendered effects of the COV-19 pandemic, social movements, environmental issues, racial injustice,  gendered based violence, the rising tide of authoritarian leadership and the accelerating pushback on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), women’s rights, and recognition of transgender identities. The volume helps to explain why despite efforts towards gender, social class, and racial equality, the world finds itself being led by a few powerful men (i.e. G7) and organizations that remain male (and often white men) dominated."
Stella M. Nkomo, University of Pretoria, South Africa
"This Handbook is an encyclopaedic and timely overview of research on masculinities in a wide range of organisational settings (including business, the state, the military, political and sports organisations and education); located in an exploration of  theoretical perspectives and with a specific focus on key issues (including leadership, embodiment, affect, violence, work-life issues and masculinity contests), it is a crucial text for all those interested in understanding today's world."
Prof Pat O’Connor, Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Limerick
"With a view to the very different geographical and organizational contexts, a great collection has been created –
"An inspiring resource providing material for "rethinking" or just to understand what masculinity can mean in a variety of contexts and conditions. From schools to financial companies, bodies to emotions, sexuality to violence, sports to universities, superheroes to leaders, masculinities shape our everyday lives and our world and it is time to take a closer look at them."
