Notă biografică
Roger Robinson is a unique combination of long-time elite runner, award-winning writer, literary scholar, historian, and front-line journalist. Roger's When Running Made History was widely praised as "the best book ever about running." His earlier Heroes and Sparrows: A Celebration of Running, Running in Literature, and 26.2 Marathon Stories are regarded as classics. Roger has contributed frequently to Runner's World, Running Times, Marathon & Beyond, Podium Runner, New Zealand Runner, and Canadian Runner and has won four American awards for his writing. His scholarly work includes the Oxford Companion to New Zealand Literature, Hardy and Darwin, Robert Louis Stevenson's Best Pacific Writings, and Katherine Mansfield: In from the Margin. Roger holds a PhD from Cambridge. He moved from England to New Zealand, first to University of Canterbury, then as full professor to Victoria University of Wellington. He served as dean and pro-vice-chancellor, led the revision of the New Zealand schools' English curriculum, and was recognized in awards for outstanding teaching. He is now emeritus professor. As an athlete, Roger represented England in the 1960s, New Zealand in the 1970s, and won world championships in the over-40 and over-50 age groups. He set masters records at the Boston, New York, Vancouver, and Canberra marathons, and he returned to elite age-group competition after knee- replacement surgeries in his 70s. He was a world-class stadium announcer for 50 years, including two Commonwealth Games, and a commentator for TV (including the Olympics) and radio. He has been involved as a writer, consultant, and expert in at least five documentary feature films on running and its history. He is a frequent celebrity speaker at major running events. Roger has been married for 34 years to women's running pioneer Kathrine Switzer. They currently split their time between Wellington, New Zealand, and New Paltz, New York.
