Rwanda, Inc.: How a Devastated Nation Became an Economic Model for the Developing World

Autor Patricia Crisafulli, Andrea Redmond
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 12 noi 2012
Seventeen years after the genocide that made Rwanda international news, the country has achieved a miraculous turnaround. This war-torn country has adopted the most promising African model for economic development, shepherded by its shrewd and decisive president, Paul Kagame. Here, Patricia Crisafulli & Andrea Redmond look at Kagame's leadership and the key elements of the so-called Rwanda Model, including self-determination and self-sufficiency, and how it can lift developing nations out of poverty without relying on Western aid. They also explore the role of the West in assisting Rwanda with one of its most important goals: to educate its young people with nine years of compulsory schooling, and then sending the best and brightest to U.S. colleges and universities, in the hopes that they will return to help their home country achieve its development goals. As so many nations stand on the brink of political and economic revolution, this is a timely and fascinating look at the implications of Rwanda's success for the rest of the continent.

Caracteristici

First in-depth look at this extraordinary Nation's turnaround: Less than two decades ago Rwanda was considered a failed nation, the victim of colonization and horrendous infighting. Today, it is Africa's rising star, with a strong pace of economic growth and development (GDP averages 7-8% per year). The authors will explore the government's ambitious development plan, known as Vision 2020, and its objectives to elevate the country on several fronts: expanding compulsory education, growing entrepreneurship and a thriving private sector, and attracting foreign business and investment
Focused on the recent past which has been ignored: Philip Gourevitch and others brought the tragic story of the Rwandan genocide alive for millions of Americans, and today public interest in the nation continues to be high. The authors explore the scarred past of Rwanda to understand just how far the country has come, and how it continues to deal with this legacy as it plans for the future
Unlimited access: With unlimited access to Rwandan President Paul Kagame and his advisors, the authors will present a compelling leadership study, focusing on the principles and practices that have resulted in the amazing turnaround of this country. With the United Nations' focus on the Millennium Development Goals, which Paul Kagame co-chairs, the timing is perfect
International marketing support: The authors already have promises of marketing support, including from Bridge2Rwanda, a high-profile NGO that will provide email blasts to its thousands of supporters. The Presidential Advisory Council has also pledged their support, including Tony Blair and Rick Warren
