Seasons of the Bear: A Yosemite Story

Autor Ginger Wadsworth Ilustrat de Daniel San Souci
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 9 aug 2016 – vârsta de la 4 până la 6 ani
This lovely picture book opens on a mother bear and her newborn cubs in their cozy den as a blanket of snow settles over Yosemite National Park. Her newborn cubs grow quickly and soon three furry, hungry black bears set out to experience their world.

Spring turns to summer, and the bears roam Tuolumne Meadows, munching tall grasses and keeping a safe distance from park visitors. But not all of the bears’ time is spent searching for food: Mama bear must remain on alert for danger and rush her cubs to safety when a forest fire rages close by or another bear threatens them. In the fall, they will fatten up on acorns before returning to their den for the winter.

Ginger Wadsworth and Daniel San Souci give readers the bear’s eye view and a tour of the seasons in Yosemite’s high country with these fascinating and mighty creatures.

Half Dome and Bridalveil Fall are landmarks of Yosemite National Park. For a more intimate view, try this lovely natural history by a pair of Northern Californians. Set in the high country, glorious watercolors zero in on a mother bear and her two cubs as they snuggle in their winter den, emerge to a snowy spring, venture into icy waters, search for food, ignore summer tourists, escape a forest fire, gorge on autumn acorns and finally prepare to hibernate. Emphasis is on the rhythm of life and behaviors to ensure survival. An author's note explains more about the park's black bears and efforts to keep them healthy. Warning: No feeding allowed! Bears will then forage "more naturally," away from campgrounds. That makes for "a win-win situation," according to this fine monograph that applauds responsible stewardship.
