Senses, Cognition, and Ritual Experience in the Roman World: Ancient Religion and Cognition

Editat de Blanka Misic, Abigail Graham
en Hardback – 28 feb 2024
How do the senses shape the way we perceive, understand, and remember ritual experiences? This book applies cognitive and sensory approaches to Roman rituals, reconnecting readers with religious experiences as members of an embodied audience. These approaches are more inclusive and accessible: allowing us to step beyond the focus on literate elites and to examine broader audiences of diverse individuals, who experienced rituals as participants and/or performers of embodied events. Case studies of ritual experiences from a variety of places, spaces, and contexts across the Roman world, including state rituals, private rituals, performances, and processions, illustrate the plurality of ways that cognitive and sensory approaches can be applied to ancient religions. Ritual experiences (pagan and Christian), ranging from a temple in Pannonia to a spectacular festival at Ephesus, demonstrate the dynamic and broad-scale application that cognitive approaches offer for ancient religion, paving the way for future interdisciplinary engagement.
