"The Shorter Catechism sets the learner at once in his right relationship with God. Withdrawing his eyes from himself, even from his own salvation, even as the chief object of concern, it fixes them on God and His glory, and bids him seek his highest blessedness in Him" (from B.B. Warfield's article, "The First Question of the Catechism"). From its publication in 1647, the Shorter Catechism has well served Presbyterian churches worldwide. In homes, churches, schools, and mission fields our catechism has been taught, memorized, and confessed. It has stood the test of time and practice to remain as our basic understanding and teaching of Biblical doctrines. It is the faith which we catechize in our churches and our testimony to the world.The Catechism has supreme value and excellent qualities for theology, catechizing, and practice. Its theological value is demonstrated in its being intended as a distillation of the Westminster Confession of Faith and a simplification of the Larger Catechism. It nobly succeeds in its remit. Its answers are carefully pared and packed with truth. The Biblical doctrines of God, sin, Christ, and redemption are succinctly covered.Presbyterians armed, fed, and taught by the Catechism are "ready to give an answer for our hope."
