Shadow Wars: The Secret Struggle for the Middle East

Autor Christopher Davidson
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 15 noi 2016
The brief euphoria that followed the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 quickly gave way to religious politics, sectarian war, bloody counter-revolutions and the most brutal incarnations of Islamic extremism ever seen. In the aftermath, people around the world once more lamented the Middle East’s apparently permanent inability to build functioning modern states. However, the reality is that this turn of events fits firmly into a centuries-old pattern of uprisings and reactions involving not only the region’s elites and their opponents but also the interests of foreign powers and their clients.

Middle East expert Christopher M. Davidson makes the devastating argument that the primary blame for the failure of the Arab Spring and the rise of Islamic extremists, including al-Qaeda and Islamic State, must rest with successive U.S. and U.K. governments. A systematic dissection of ongoing Western manipulations of the most powerful forces in the Middle East, Shadow Wars is a shocking book that demands to be read.

Recenzii

"SHADOW WARS is an outstanding book, bracing in its understanding of the rapacious forces that set upon the Middle East and meticulous in weaving the historical threads that explain why."
—John Pilger

"A thought provoking and original take on the present catastrophic realities in the Middle East. SHADOW WARS is a tour de force that begins with the past European Revolutions and ends up with an intriguing and highly convincing analysis of the demise of the Arab Spring. No one is spared in this incisive analysis: Arab regimes, fundamentalist movements, the West and Israel are all castigated here for their responsibility for the suffering of the people of Middle East today."
— Ilan Pappe, Professor of History, University of Exeter, and author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine

PRAISE FOR CHRISTOPHER DAVIDSON'S PREVIOUS BOOK AFTER THE SHEIKS:

"Mr Davidson is one of the most knowledgeable academics writing about the region. He sets out his scenario of monarchical doom with authoritative and often riveting detail. ... Plainly he is right that each of the monarchs has cause to worry."
—The Economist

"Davidson's book [has] clarity and a writing style that excites interest. Davidson is to be commended for producing such a compact but lucid volume on an area of the world ... which is largely obscure to the general public of the West."
— The Muslim World Book Review

"This fine-tuned monarchical resilience, Davidson argues, cannot be sustained for much longer. Immense internal pressures are building up and the pressure-cooker is about to explode. Davidson marshals an impressive array of evidence."
—Independent

"An important account. . . This is an unsentimental story of hard-nosed political calculation, conspicuous consumption (the UAE is the world's biggest consumer of scotch), opaque budgets and sovereign wealth funds that hoover up assets such as Harrods and the Emirates Stadium."
—The Guardian

"Davidson argues in this theoretically rigorous and empirically sounds book [that] the anachronistic system of Gulf monarchies will collapse as they are unable to the needs of their young and increasingly tech-savvy citizens. Highly recommended."
—CHOICE

"Christopher Davidson, an astute observer of politics in the Gulf, describes in his important new book, After the Sheikhs: The Coming Collapse of the Gulf Monarchies, the various ways in which the Gulf monarchies have continued to buy respite from internal and external pressures."
—Bloomberg

PRAISE FOR DUBAI: THE VULNERABILITY OF SUCCESS
"Here is what really distinguishes Mr. Davidson’s book: Unlike most foreigners who want to remain in or return to this nondemocratic emirate, he has the courage to discuss what he calls Dubai’s vulnerabilities."
— The New York Times
