Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Boer Wagon

Autor Kieran McMullen
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 23 oct 2012
It was an incredible year, the start of a new century. Queen Victoria was still on the throne, the Paris Exposition was the talk of Europe and Count Zeppelin was conquering the air. The Tsar had completed the Trans-Siberian Railway, the Boxer Rebellion surged through China, in South Africa the Boers of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State defied the British Empire, and at home Sherlock Holmes was at the peak of his powers. It was not a case of when the great detective's powers were needed but where. Mycroft sends for both his brother Sherlock and Dr Watson to help solve the mystery of lost secret plans and of missing gold in the fight that will become the Second Boer War. Watson accompanies his friend Dr Arthur Conan Doyle and Langman's Hospital to the battlefields of the Boer Republics as Holmes tries to stop the leak of information and recover a king's ransom. The biggest question is who to trust in a land ravaged by war and with countless conflicting loyalties. Will Holmes and Watson stop the leak before Lord Roberts tries to take Pretoria?

Notă biografică

This is the third historical Sherlock Holmes thriller from Kieran McMullen - the first two having generated worldwide acclaim. McMullen is an author with a background as varied as his favorite character Dr. John H. Watson. He grew up in the seashore town of Northport on Long Island s North shore. Here he learned a love of fishing and sailing. He then spent twenty-two years on active duty in the US Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving in the Gulf War. He and his wife spent the next twenty years in Rush Springs, Oklahoma where they raised their three children. McMullen worked in defense contracting and spent twelve years in law enforcement. He was also a member of the Grady County Volunteer Fire Department. McMullen has been involved in training horse teams and artillery for Civil War reenacting since the early 1980 s and holds a BA in History from St. John s University and an MA in Human Resources from Pepperdine. Kieran and his wife Helen along with horses and Irish Wolfhounds now live just north of Darien, Georgia. Kieran has been a fan of Holmes and Watson since his father, an English Literature professor, gave him the complete Doyle stories at the age of eight. He is the author of three books from MX Publishing: Watson s Afghan Adventure, Sherlock Holmes and the Irish Rebels and the soon to be published, Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Boer Wagon. He has also published a work on the care of horse teams for Civil War re-enactors and holds a patent for artillery howitzers.

Recenzii

Few people have considered the early life of John H Watson in any depth. Kieran McMullen, author of Watson's Afghan Adventure is a former professional soldier and a specialist in American military history an appropriate person to tell of Watson s experiences as an army surgeon. Exciting, and full of authentic military detail. - Sherlock Holmes Society of London
