Recenzii
I found Shi'ism Revisited extremely interesting, surefooted, rich, very well-argued, and well-presented. There are resources in the book that one can hardly find in any other study of the same genre. It is no doubt of value to anyone and everyone working and researching in the field.
Takim has written the most comprehensive book on Shi?i ijtihad in English, and he unapologetically calls for urgent, sweeping legal reforms, gender equality, and human rights. This book contains an entire education on the inner workings of Islamic law.
But one also needs to go beyond and look at writings in philosophy- one thinks of the important oeuvre of 'Allamah Tabtaba'i on metaphysics, the scope of nature, and indeed of moral reasoning that is devoid of metaphysical foundations. Perhaps the major take home from this book is that paying lip-service to the rational foundations of the moral law and the importance of a training in philosophy is insufficient; what is needed is a proper rational turn that brings philosophical learning and reasoning into a close, critical, and congruent conversation with the moral ambit.
