The lure of high salaries and exotic travel working for big oil in Saudi Arabia attracts people from around the world. Some of these people flaunt the laws of the country and risk imprisonment and deportation by engaging in illegal activities and ventures. Mark Carlile was offered a job with the oil giant Aramco (Arabian American Oil Company) in Saudi Arabia. When he arrived in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia with his family he found that his job was not what he expected. During his five and a half year tenure in this foreign country with many restrictions, he would experience several humorous events, and also the tragedies that befell friends and work associates. Friends were deported for an alcohol related offence. Work associates were imprisoned for making, selling and distributing illicit alcohol, for importing drugs, and for making and distributing pornographic movies. All illegal activities fuelled by greed and arrogance. Mark was previously employed by a major engineering consultant in Calgary, Alberta, Canada as an inspection supervisor. He was responsible for the inspection and testing of large control panels, electrical distribution panels, instrumentation for the oil industry, and high voltage switchgear for mining. He thought he was being hired by Aramco for a similar position. After five and a half years in the kingdom, Mark came home with knowledge and qualifications that he could not have anticipated.
