Silver: Return to Treasure Island

David Tennant Autor Andrew Motion
en Limba Engleză CD-Audio – 6 aug 2012 – vârsta de la 18 ani
July, 1802. In the marshy eastern reaches of the Thames lies the Hispaniola, an inn kept by Jim Hawkins and his son. Young Jim spends his days roaming the mist-shrouded estuaries, running errands for his father and listening to his stories in the taproom; tales of adventures on the high seas, of curses, murder and revenge, black spots and buried treasure - and of a man with a wooden leg.Late one night, a mysterious girl named Natty arrives on the river with a request for Jim from her father - Long John Silver. Aged and weak, but still possessing a strange power, the pirate proposes that Jim and Natty sail to Treasure Island in search of Captain Flint's hidden bounty, the 'beautiful bar silver' left behind many years before. Silver has chartered a ship and a hardy crew for this purpose, whose captain is waiting only for the map, now locked away at the Hispaniola.Making haste from London, Jim and Natty set off in the footsteps of their fathers, their tentative friendship growing stronger day by day. But the thrill of the ocean odyssey gives way to terror as the Nightingale reaches its destination, for it seems that Treasure Island is not as uninhabited as it once was... Featuring a cast of noble seamen, murderous pirates, and stories of love, valour and terrible cruelty, Silver is a worthy sequel to Treasure Island - one of the greatest adventure stories ever told - and a work of extraordinary authenticity and imaginative power from one of England's greatest writers.

Recenzii

Earphones Award Winner. "[David] Tennant's every word is magic. His guttural vowel pronunciations resonate delightfully, and his piratical rasps and mimicry of mynah bird Spot are amazing. Andrew Motion's pastiche captures the period's formal prose, which sparkles with vivid description and dynamic exploits." - AudioFile Magazine
Starred Review. One of the Best Books 2012: Historical Fiction. "As modern sequels to well-loved classics go, this worthy follow-up by former British poet laureate Motion has everything: a seagoing adventure with endearing heroes, barbarous pirates, venomous snakes, a loquacious parrot, and romance. Can't miss." - Library Journal
Editor's Choice. "The ship of Motion's prose rides gracefully, his descriptions of nature buoying the senses firmly enough to hold even a young reader's interest. ...With 'Silver,' Andrew Motion places the poet adventurer up in the sky where he belongs, coasting and gliding in favorable winds, pointing the way to literary treasure." - The New York Times
An Oprah Book of the Week. "Motion shares that wickedly delightful sense of story and language of his predecessor. ...a page-turner that thoughtfully questions its own world - and makes you long for a sequel to the sequel." - Oprah.com
"...Motion matches the raw vitality of Stevenson, though his conclusion is far more grim...his ambition is admirable, as is his stylistic elegance." - Kirkus Reviews
"Silver is quality work with equal portions of 'friendship, loyalty, and pirates' written by a master conjurer of words and phrases." - The Buffalo News
"...rich and thrilling narrative which so ingeniously complements [Treasure Island]." - The Independent (UK)
"Motion writes beautifully...a darker world than Stevenson's with real evil and genuine loss in it - and a tentative but credible burgeoning love story. Considered as a sequel, Silver more than holds its own as an adventure story." - Irish Independent (UK)
"...a splendid adventure story in its own right." - The Guardian (UK)
"...full of wonderful descriptions and beautiful sentences..." - The Telegraph (UK)
"...a thoroughly enjoyable book in its own right: a worthy sequel." - WeLoveThisBook.com
