On July 3, 2015, the earth and its inhabitants experience a significant solar event. A CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) erupts from the sun and races toward earth at a startling speed of 1-million miles per hour. A CME has been described as a "solar flare on steroids" and can range in intensity from the weak glancing blows that cause the northern and southern lights to a mega event that can incinerate everything on earth, such as scientists believe occurred in 9,700 BCE, spurring the beginning of the end of the last ice-age. The event on July 3 fell between these two extremes. The governments of the world provide little, or no, advanced warning of the impending event other than the suggestion that people stay indoors and turn off any electrically or battery-operated devices; a message that understandably did not reach the bulk of the world's population. When the geomagnetic storm, caused by the solar outburst, passes through the earth's atmosphere, the world's electrical grid is destroyed. Manufacturing, transportation, and communications come to a halt; governments collapse; and mankind, to varying degrees based on his developmental acumen, is left to ponder how he will survive. Fires, explosions, and anarchy take countless millions of lives while lack of water, starvation and disease take countless millions more. A group of four families living in the Village of Oak Creek, near Sedona, Arizona, who refer to themselves as the "Morningside Mavericks," use their collective knowledge and skills to implement a survival strategy. Moving to the top of a nearby mesa, away from the deprivations affecting their community, they settle into the 700-year old pueblo ruins of the long-forgotten Sinagua Indians. The story of their survival, utilizing old and new technologies, and the building of a new social and political paradigm, will make the reader contemplate his/her own survival instincts in a cataclysmically-changed world.
