Six Million Ways

Autor David Zwanetz
en Limba Engleză Paperback
Six Million Ways is an outrageously violent, time-twisting, dialogue-filled homage to the 1990's gangster films of Quentin Tarantino, The Hughes Brothers, Ernest Dickerson, Mario Van Peebles and John Singleton. Six Million Ways blends to perfection the seamless violence of American gangster movies with the fragmented story telling of classic cult films such as Pulp Fiction and Citizen Kane. As we ride in the backseat of the life of Jesse and Evan, two-bit hoodlums looking for their first big score, everything seems to be set until the pages of this short story peel-back layers of drama, mystery, mayhem, and deceit. David Zwanetz paints a satirical portrait of the story's charters that changes by the page. With half a million dollars on the line, true colors shine through, and friendships are literally torn to pieces. The story begins in the middle of young Jesse's outlandish opportunity to make a one-time drug run up the east coast. Quickly and directly, the story dissects the inner workings of money lust and greed, as the borders of good and evil are broken down. In true form to the gangster-genre, the lines of morality are blurred page by page until brutal violence becomes a guilty pleasure of the story's characters and the reader. As the story advances, the chapters overlap to reveal the true foundations of plans gone awry. Readers are left chapter by chapter to anticipate just how far people will go to further their own agendas at the expense of one another. In most cases, the story errs on the side of unbridled moral corruption. One of the many unexpected highlights in Six Million Ways is the casual dialogue between the story's main characters: Jesse, Evan, and Blake. "It's about the now. Living for the moment," says one of them to the other over sloppy burgers and fries. Ironically, in the world of Six Million Ways, as we flip through channels of corruption, we discover that the future is the only real priority for these boys, and maybe even society as a whole. In an exaggerated tribute to a lost art, and with a firm head-nod to the gangster gods of the 1990's, David Zwanetz, in Six Million Ways, aims to make his own mark in the gangster genre with this short story.
