Snow Fleas and Chickadees: Everyday Observations in the Sierra
Autor Eve Quesnel Ilustrat de Anne Chadwicken Limba Engleză Hardback – 20 mai 2025 – vârsta ani
Quesnel embraces the notion that to simply walk in one’s neighborhood is to familiarize oneself with the local flora and fauna, drawing attention to everyday things too often neglected. She argues that we can be complacent with what surrounds us, but with careful observation and research, we become acutely aware—and in awe of—nature’s everyday activities. The black bear’s hibernation techniques and mountain chickadee’s caching methods reveal just two of nature’s wily ways. Quesnel chases other curiosities as well, asking, “How does a spider create an orb web?” or, “How does a boulder the size of a small car end up alone in the woods?” In the introduction, she writes, “It is this ‘un-peeling’ of layers in nature that opens up our world.”
For anyone interested in nature writing, whether an armchair explorer, outdoor enthusiast, or science aficionado, Snow Fleas and Chickadees provides an entertaining and engaging discovery of the picturesque Sierra Nevada.

Recenzii
“Reading this graceful, engaging book made me feel as if the hurried, fragmented world had finally slowed down long enough for its finest secrets to be revealed. Eve Quesnel’s endless curiosity leads her to fascinating questions—and even more astounding answers—that enrich our understanding of the Sierra Nevada."
—Michael P. Branch, author of Raising Wild: Dispatches from a Home in the Wilderness and On the Trail of the Jackalope: How a Legend Captured the World’s Imagination and Helped Us Cure Cancer
“Snow Fleas and Chickadees is a delightful romp through California’s Sierra Nevada with a friendly, knowledgeable guide, examining not just the megafauna—bears and coyotes—but everyday wonders, such as algae and ants, fungus and fleas. This lovely book is the perfect companion whether out on a multi-day trek or a backyard amble and has therefore earned a permanent place in my backpack.”
—Suzanne Roberts, author of Almost Somewhere: Twenty-Eight Days on the John Muir Trail
“Identifying plants and animals we encounter in nature is fun and challenging but it is only the start of a naturalist’s world. Wild things have amazing stories. Learning these stories adds richness and wonder to our world. In Snow Fleas and Chickadees, Eve Quesnel and Anne Chadwick pull back the curtain and share tales that will fill you with joy and awe. This book will deepen your appreciation and love of nature as you explore the Sierra Nevada.”
