Walter Parker teaches in the College of Education at the University of Washington in Seattle where he chairs the Social Studies Education Program. Earlier he taught at the University of Texas at Arlington.He studies K–12 social studies education generally and, in particular, civic education and the new international education movement. His other books include Renewing the Social Studies Curriculum (1991); Educating the Democratic Mind (1996); Education for Democracy: Contexts, Curricula, and Assessments (2002); and Teaching Democracy: Unity and Diversity in Public Life (2003).He is the editor of the Research and Practice column for Social Education, the flagship journal of the National Council for the Social Studies. Walter was born and raised in Englewood, Colorado, on Denver’s south side, and taught school for many years in Adams County on Denver’s north side. He earned the B.A. in Political Science (University of Colorado, Boulder), the M.A. in Social Foundations of Education (University of Colorado, Denver), and the Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (University of Washington, Seattle). He lives in Seattle with his wife, Sheila Valencia.

- Reflections Each chapter has a side-bar called “Reflection” that is placed alongside the most important material in the chapter. This lets readers know what the author of the book takes to be the key content of the chapter, and asks them to stop and ponder it.
- Trends. Chapter 1 takes stock of strong currents that are washing over schools today. At the center is the high-stakes testing frenzy that got underway in the late 1990s and has resulted in both “curriculum standards” and “curriculum narrowing.” Also central is globalization and the increasing pressure to educate U.S. students about the world: “global education.”
- Pledging Allegiance As pressure for global education mounts, so does nationalism. More states are requiring students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. A new section on the Pledge in Chapter 3 provides a brief history of those 31 words along with two activities–a seminar and a simulation–that will help children think about the Pledge rather than merely memorize it. Also, there are historical and contemporary photos of “pledging allegiance” from the U.S. and Singapore.
- Maps and Google Earth. In Chapter 5, the four full-color pages now feature an illustrated “dictionary of geographic terms in addition to a cross-section landform map and the Dymaxion world map projection. Also, Google Earth is now presented along with a powerful teaching procedure that takes advantage of its 3D graphic capabilities to highlight the children’s own school and zoom in and out from it.
- Controversies. In social studies, there are plenty of professional controversies, and this new feature invites you to participate in these debates. Here are several:
- Patriotism (ch. 3) — Should children recite the Pledge of Allegiance daily?
- Capital punishment (ch. 5) — Should children memorize the states and their capitals?
- Political views (ch. 6) — Should teachers leave their political opinions at the classroom door?
- Pluto’s demotion (ch. 9) — How and why does knowledge change?
- The technology solution (ch. 10) — Is a laptop for every child a boon or a waste of money?
- Curriculum Integration (ch. 13) — When should subjects be integrated and when is it better for them to be kept apart?
- Field Trips and Fieldwork. The thorough three-phase field trip planning guide is back by popular demand, and now it is supported with photographs of Singapore’s unique approach to “fieldwork.”
- Deep Conceptual Learning. Chapter 9’s treatment of the powerful strategy concept formation now incorporates the story of Pluto’s demotion from planetary status. The case clearly illustrates how concepts are made by humans, not nature. It focuses on what concept formation is all about: deep conceptual learning rather than superficial “coverage.”
- Manipulatives. The full-color manipulatives section of hands-on construction activities is again included in the planning chapter (8). These folded paper graphics are featured in other chapters, too, as aids to concept formation and inquiry in Chapter 9, for example. These kinesthetic activities are ready to use in a beginning teacher’s first classroom.
- Web-based inquiries. These are featured as one of two uses of the Internet in Chapter 10. The teacher pre-identifies the websites students encounter, and in this way keeps children safe while modeling wise inquiry-oriented Internet use. Second, the virtual field trip is back by popular demand so students can “visit” not only the seven ancient wonders of the world, but the seven new wonders recently chosen by voters around the globe.
- Time and Chronology The section called “Developing a Sense of Time and Chronology”, which includes developing the vocabulary of chronology a well as the ability to read and make time lines that show the relative amount of time between events, was moved from Chapter 5 to Chapter 4.
- Children’s Literature. Dozens of carefully-selected (and often award-winning) children’s literature suggestions are given throughout the book. By popular demand, the Socratic Seminar, which is a powerful approach to literature circles in social studies, is included in this chapter as well.
- Lesson Plans. Twenty-three Model Lesson Plans are again provided throughout the text. Each has been carefully updated and features important content, a sensible procedure, assessment, and ideas for curriculum integration. And now, each objective is keyed to one or more of the NCSS standards.
- End-of-Chapter Questions. These have been systematized. The first question at the end of every chapter asks readers to delve further into the Reflection side-bar that appeared once earlier in the chapter. The second and third questions focus on additional key material in the chapter. The fourth directs readers to connect the chapter to one of the illustrative teaching vignettes (lesson examples) that appear in the NCSS standards Sampler, which may be packaged with the book.
