Somerset is an old county of southwest England with a rich diversity of landscapes from the high Mendip and Quantock Hills to the flood-prone Somerset Levels and the Bristol Channel coast. The rocks that underlie the county are largely responsible for this diversity with strata from the era of ancient life up to deposits laid down during the last ice age and even more recently.'
