Michael McClure's recent books are Of Indigo and Saffrron: Selected and New Poems (University of California Press, 2010) and Mysteriosos and Other Poems (New Directions, 2010).
McClure is the recipient of many awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship, an Obie Award for Best Play, a Rockefeller grant for playwriting, The Josephine Miles Award, and The Alfred Jarry Award. He has written more than twenty plays which are performed in the U.S. and abroad.
His play The Beard was arrested by police 14 performances in a row in Los Angeles—for its representation of Billy the Kid and Jean Harlow in a "tantric" event in a blue velvet eternity. The Beard was central in the battles against censorship and went on to win praise and awards in NYC.
McClure often performs his poetry with Ray Manzarek of the Doors playing piano, and they have made albums and DVDs. Composer Terry Riley and McClure's recent album is titled I Like Your Eyes Liberty. McClure wrote the pop song "Mercedes Benz" with Janis Joplin. McClure enjoys travel in South America, East Africa, and Mexico, in addition to the usual destinations. He is married to the sculptor Amy Evans McClure.
