Col is security chief for the artificial mini-world of JUBILEE – a kind of Vegas-in-space. But his peaceful life is shattered by a surprise attack, and desperate to save his young family, he flees with an unlikely crew including ex-wife, Sana. But the League base he reaches is riven by politics and infiltrated by the enemy. Col must escape again, this time to his birth planet, where he faces long dormant personal demons. Where is Jubilee? What’s happened to Col’s wife and kids? How can he stop these politically incorrect feelings for Sana from bubbling up? Only the stars can tell.

Descriere
Jubilee is an artificial world existing within its own parallel universe. Free from all government control and ruled by the eccentric AI, Douglas, it’s a Vegas-in-space. A seething cesspool of drugs, prostitution and all-round nastiness. That’s what Col used to think, anyway. Before he was sent there on a secret mission with partner Danee ... and OK yes, there is all that vice, smut, and carry-on people talk about - but so much more as well. Turns out Jubilee is actually a kind of utopia, where people are free to live any way they choose, so long as no-one else is harmed in the process.Col has settled down on Jubilee with Danee and their two kids, working as head of Security. But this peaceful life is shattered by a surprise attack, and he’s forced to run. Separated from his young family by the attack, and desperate to alert the authorities he escapes with a super-random crew: his feisty ex-wife Sana, the brooding sec-droid Batum, a degenerate alcoholic named Chook, and Sheng, an abandoned child with surprising talents. Their escape ship makes it to a remote Galactic League base, but as they come within comms range, Col receives a partial, and highly garbled faster-than-light message from Danee. Seems she might be alive somewhere, along with his two daughters. Col is tortured; what should he do now? Is there a hidden meaning inside that message?‘Tiger Base’, where they’ve washed up, turns out to be no sanctuary; it’s a hornet’s nest of political intrigue and infiltrated by the sinister and ever-expanding Movement For Morality - the group who assailed Jubilee and are implacably opposed to its guiding principles. When a ‘Movement’ battleship appears out of hyperspace, Col knows he must run again. This time, there’s no-where else left but his birth planet of Brouggh, where he faces long dormant personal demons. Where has Jubilee gone? What’s happened to Col’s wife and kids? How can he stop these politically incorrect feelings for Sana from bubbling up? Only the stars can tell.
Notă biografică
Stephen K. Stanford has been a serial entrepreneur since the age of twenty-one, launching numerous projects in the arts, fashion and music industries. He fell in love with books as a child, devouring his fathers’ vast 'golden age' sci-fi collection, and lives in Melbourne with his wife and two highly truculent Siamese cats.
Recenzii
On Jubilee – "An amusing and fast-paced saga sure to please fans of classic space opera."
On Jubilee – "Sf fans will enjoy this adventure that takes a look at the future of humans in space. Stanford’s debut pushes his characters to the brink while making statements about our current world."
On Jubilee – "A pair of detectives venture into an AI-ruled parallel universe to discreetly recover the body of a politician’s son—a job that proves trickier than they’d first thought, especially as they start to realize the attraction between them."
"Jubilee is the sort of book that will please both regular readers of non-intrusive space opera adventure as well as those looking for the pointed social critiques of the coolest New Wave sf. And which is as entertaining a look at human foibles as any crime novel written by Elmore Leonard. Stanford’s writing is infectious, readable stuff. Ideas and action flow nicely, the characters pop, the situations veer from light to dark and back again with ease, and the book balances beach read readability, grit, and satiric punch."
On Jubilee – "Jubilee is a breath of fresh air in a genre that seems too often stuck in a pattern of dense stories that tend to take themselves too seriously. Jubilee is just one hell of a ride through a galaxy of excitement and intrigue. Strap on your rocket pack and get ready for the ride of your life!"
On Jubilee – "Get past the surface pulp romp and into the action, and you find a thoughtful, entertaining adventure that ends with a modern family and new adventures on the horizon."
On Jubilee – "A ripping yarn, fast paced and easy to read."
On Jubilee – “Space operas are a great genre, but can often be staid. You can have fun in space and that is what Jubilee brings to the party. High adventures [and] an interesting mix of gritty world building with some fun characters. I would gladly read more misadventures of Col.”
On Jubilee – "An action-packed, smart-talking plot scrambles its way to a satisfying end. There’s potential for more adventures for these investigators, whose energy and connection soars."
