Subtle Differences, Big Faux Pas - Test Your Cultural Competence

Autor Elizabeth Vennekens-Kelly
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 24 mar 2012
Using first names may seem like a friendly way to begin a meeting, but will your business associates see it that way? Want to give yellow flowers to express gratitude and friendship to your dinner hostess... but will she understand the message? Will your thumbs-up gesture be interpreted as positive or offensive? Situations like these arise regularly when you interact with individuals from different cultures. Cross-cultural gaffes can hurt relationships, business deals and your chance of happiness overseas. Cross-cultural trainer, Elizabeth Vennekens-Kelly, is an American and former healthcare executive. She is married to a Belgian and now lives and works in several European countries. In this book she aims to help you appreciate that just because something is done one way in your country does not mean it is acceptable in another. This book is a fun, light-hearted, but very important, first step towards establishing intercultural awareness. "Subtle Differences, Big Faux Pas is packed with practical tips and exercises that will lead the reader to a successful life overseas. Whether you are living or working internationally, Elizabeth Kelly doles out advice to help the reader understand and enjoy a full international experience. Her golden rules: don't be shy, trust your instinct, and listen. Good advice for everyone!"Celeste Brown, FAWCO President 2007-2009 "So useful for expat women; a practical and entertaining manual, written from 'first hand' experience."Elena Bucciero, publisher, (A)WAY magazine, www.awaymagazine.be "A cross-cultural primer chock full of important information and describing many brief cross-cultural dilemmas. The book is loaded with quizzes and that was my favorite part. I think anyone or everyone will find this book useful as well as fun to read."Norine Dresser, author of Multicultural Manners, www.norinedresser.com

Notă biografică

Elizabeth Vennekens-Kelly is an intercultural trainer and consultant. She was born and raised in the United States. Before relocating to Europe Elizabeth was a business executive in the United States for twenty years. She has spent the last 10 years working in Western Europe, interacting with individuals from more than 40 countries around the world, professionally and collegially, where she has gained invaluable knowledge about individual cultures. Combining her business experience, familiarity of expat living and intercultural knowledge, Elizabeth works to help those relocating to and doing business overseas to effectively interact and communicate in multi-cultural situations. She works with both individuals and groups, conducts training seminars and workshops, and gives intercultural presentations throughout Europe. She has worked with people from numerous firms, organizations and companies such as Sony, Honeywell, European Central Bank, Suez Energy, Janssen Pharmaceutica, and Bloomberg Financial. Her philosophy is: having good management and communication skills are essential for effective business leaders; similarly, having cultural competencies are vital to effective managers working in multi-national companies. Management and communication skills, along with intercultural interactions are not complex concepts, but when they are not understood and utilized, the results can be very costly. Elizabeth is a member of organizations including SIETAR, FIGT, AWCA, MIWC and FAWCO. She served as the Chairperson of FAWCO's Sharing Cultures Task Force (2009-2012). Her goal is to help individuals develop the cultural competencies they need to be successful and to encourage people to make the most of the unique opportunity of living outside their passport country. In addition to English, Elizabeth speaks Dutch and has a working knowledge of German.
