Early in the Second World War the then General Alexander issued an edict that any member of the armed forces who was found keeping a diary would be severely punished. Curiously enough when the war was over, Field Marshal Alexander, as he has then become, was one of the very first to publish his wartime diary! This is the wartime diary of Corporal J. A. Womack of the Royal Engineers.
