The only place that bar-hopping, bed-jumping Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Tim Zawadzki has ever really felt at home is in the cockpit of a KC-135 Stratotanker. Having escaped his hometown of Millville and his lively Polish Catholic family the day he left for college, Tim kept running and never looked back. Wren Krull, his high school sweetheart, has never been more at home than she is working with Tim's mom, Lou, at the Sunrise Bakery. Having been released from prison with nothing more than the clothes on her back and the deed to her deceased grandparents' property on a street named after her proud German ancestors, days spent at the bakery with Sicilian bodybuilder-turned-baker Mauritsio Covello are the only things that make having to live under the weight of her past bearable. Directionless and frustrated after learning that he's being forced into early retirement, Tim is anything but pleased when he's summoned back to Western New York for his older son's wedding. It's not long before he's face to face with Wren and the disquieting realization that in fleeing Millville to follow his dreams a lifetime before, he may have squandered his singular chance at real happiness and true love. Wren, on the other hand, is left to decide if never-healed wounds and a re-discovered love from her past should be allowed the power to shape her future.
