Sustainable Negotiation – What Physics Can Teach Us About International Negotiation

Autor Eliane Karsaklian
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 23 iul 2017
The book explains how science went through the same struggle 100 years ago. When experimenters were no longer seeing the results they expected from the laws of classical physics, quantum mechanics evolved to provide a new model. In addition, the book shows how many useful ideas that explain the natural world--including uncertainty, probability, paradox and context--have practical applications for negotiators working internationally. And it does this in a colourful way that's easy for business professionals to understand: using rainbows, light waves and a cat to explain them. Then it introduces the concept of Sustainable Negotiation to replace the old notion of winning. Instead of "doing a deal" and walking away, negotiation becomes a continuous process of solving problems and creating a relationship with no term limits. This reflects the world today. Just as we strive to create a sustainable approach to the natural world, we need to do the same as people if we want to keep living together and build a better business world. No other book has ever explored the parallels between physics and international negotiation. In addition to presenting complex ideas in a simple way, this book features a list of key ideas at the end of each chapter. It also offers experiments--in physics and in real-life negotiations--that readers can do to gain a personal understanding of the information. Readers are then invited to submit their answers to the experiments to the author so they may benefit from an expert's opinion. The book makes the case that negotiators need to know what is not visible so they can explain what is visible. This alignment with quantum mechanics also gives negotiators the tools to think differently about what they see. For example, professionals from Western cultures with an "either/or" perspective on the world will now be able to understand people from "both/and" cultures. Rather than championing one approach over the other, the book invites to disrupt with the old theories and move forward to a more comprehensive world which embraces integration instead of exclusion of cultural specificities.
