Simon Spleen is just one of the young cells attending the Gerald School of Cellular Apprenticeship. Gerald is the name of the boy whose body they inhabit, support, and defend. The school helps young cells learn their different roles in the human body.

Simon's mother doesn't want him to go to school. After his father died in battle, Simon is all she has. But Simon is excited about the opportunity to prove his worth. He meets other young cells, including the energetic Jeff Heart, the uptight Lizy Thyroid, the knowledgeable Jon Appendix, and the carefree Ryan Lung. The friends get to know each other and begin studying the different systems in the body.

The school year is going great until the evil Meningitis attacks This horrible disease wants to invade Gerald's entire body, and the immune system is becoming overwhelmed. Nonimmune cells like Simon, his friends, and his other classmates will have to help defeat Meningitis once and for all
