Geology instructor Alex Cave receives an urgent message about an unusual geologic event in Iceland. Something had created a huge spiral tunnel straight down into a dormant volcano. He is put in charge of the investigation, and what he discovers at the bottom is an alien artifact more powerful than a nuclear weapon. Janice Sloan manages to steal the alien device, but takes it deep into the Nevada desert and turns it on. Birds start slamming into the ground around the artifact, but for some reason she can't turn it off. She removes the key and abandons the device in the desert. Alex learns the stolen device is affecting the moon's orbit, dragging it closer to earth. If it continues, the extreme tidal affect will rip the planet apart.
