Recenzii
Specialists in the constitutional and social history of Athens will find much of value in this book
The author displays an impressive command of modern scholarship in German, French, and English, as well as the ancient historical and epigraphical record. He makes good use of the orators and comedy. The appendices are useful; sources and topics are well indexed.
The tone is scrupulously sober. Yet the reader lifts his head from the text to find that his painstaking progress has brought him far from the familiar world of classical Athens to stand, with a wild surmise, silent upon a peak in Darien.
J.'s interpretation of ancient texts is uniformly interesting and strong ... The strength of his book is in the details ... The book deserves to be widely consulted.
