It is often said among the Yorubas of Nigeria that "charity begins at home." Dr. Olaiya Aina grew up in a village with his parents and grandparents. His grandmother and his Dad used to tell stories every evening, especially when the moon was bright. The series of children's stories that he grew up with and knows today were mostly told by them.

"The Boy, the Dove, and the Hawk" is the story of a crippled, blind boy named Baoku. One day, he is offered the chance to have his sight restored by a hawk if he gives him the dove to eat. But that same day, the dove offers to give him the power to walk again if he saves his life. Now, Baoku must make the difficult decision of which means more to him-to walk again, or to see again. He asks his friends what he should do, but his friends can't help him make that decision.

Will Baoku make the right decision? "The Boy, the Dove, and the Hawk" is a cautionary tale that will challenge children to rely on their own intelligence, rather than trying to rely on their friends or other people to make life-changing decisions.
