For years, Ted Heaton has been a strong devotee of Socrates, so when one morning, an unexpected gift of a chipped Buddha he would later call Irving was left at his front door, he had a realisation about what self-acceptance as a man can really mean. After years of childhood sexual, physical and emotional abuse, stalked by a pack of wolves, chased by mafiosa, threatened with death by fathers, husbands and ex-husbands, suffering the wrath and cost of many wives and confronted by Mounties, Ted's expectations of reaching enlightenment were remote.
