The Buddha, the Dharma, and Me

Autor Janice Rubin
en Limba Engleză Paperback
In the opening memoir the author writes about a life that she perceived as a burden, and its transformation to one of equanimity and joy. The second part describes the Buddhist practices responsible for her altered outlook. The third talks of everyday experiences her responses to which benefitted from her practice. Buddhism is not a religion and does not conflict with the beliefs of those who follow a religion or those who do not. It is a practice, a path followed by those who wish to avoid creating pain or suffering for themselves or others. This volume shows how, by doing the work of self-examination and critically examining the precepts of Buddhism, the author was able to transform old habit patterns of behavior and learn new ways to live a peaceful, rewarding life. It describes practices, that have helped those who walk the path, including the author, to transform their suffering and to learn how to react to life's exigencies in ways that avoid bringing pain into their lives and inflicting pain on others. It explains the metta practice, which helps us to overcome the negative evaluations of ourselves with which we may have grown up; it helps us to understand those who may have instilled them in us, thereby paving the way for reconciliation with those from whom we may be estranged. Meditation and mindfulness practice helps us to remain focused on what we are doing, thinking, and feeling; it helps us to empathize with others and feel more compassionate toward ourselves for our perceived shortcomings. The author also explains how such concepts as non-self, impermanence and interbeing help us to create a more peaceful and loving community. The author regards Thich Nhat Hanh as her principal teacher. The Venerable Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese monk, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Dr, Martin Luther King Jr., established the Order of Interbeing, which is based in Plum Village in France and has monasteries and sanghas (practice communities) in the U.S. and Europe as well. The author is the convener of a sangha in New Jersey, that was established in 1998 by a Presbyterian pastor, and is affiliated with Blue Cliff Monastery in Pine Bush, NY.
