Recenzii
This reference should meet the needs of librarians, teachers, and scholars. Although there is some overlap with Guides to Collection Development for Children and Young Adults, by Gillespie and Ralph Folcarelli, the last edition of that work appeared in 1998. Recommended. College and university libraries supporting upper-level undergraduates and above; public libraries.
This new book would be useful to any librarians who deal with children's and young adult literature. It can be used as a selection guide and a collection development aid. Well-written, concise annotations of 25-1,250 words included for every entry are especially useful.
This book is a very useful resource, particularly for children's librarians, elementary education students, and library students.
This handbook is truly broad in scope, bringing a more global approach to children's literature than its previous edition..Well-organized by topic, this book evaluates more than one thousand publications..The most important aspect of Gillespie's work is that it includes more than American materials, encompassing resources from other English-speaking countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. These additions add new viewpoints and perspectives, broadening the range of the handbook..This handbook, with its inclusion of international resources and updated and descriptive entries, is a useful selection guide and collection development tool for all librarians. In addition, this text can be used as a source for researchers and scholars.
John T. Gillespie, prolific reference specialist (Juniorplots, etc.) has hit the center of the bulls-eye with this fine guide to just about every bibliographical source that you could ever track down for juvenile literature. Ranging from retrospective through contemporary to the ubiquitous Internet, he has recorded all of the sources in the English language that a researcher could possible aspire to utilize..This is a book that should be in every public library, as well as every educational library and every library school.
[M]uch broader in scope and depth than the original work. The volume is comprehensive and well organized. The nine chapters cover general background sources and histories; retrospective bibliographies; current American reviewing tools, annual bibliographies, and children's magazines; curriculum-related bibliographies; multicultural sources; literary awards and prizes, including state and regional awards; guides to promoting literature and services for children and young adults; guides to biographies of authors and illustrators; professional organizations, agencies, publishers, and booksellers; guides to special collections and resources; and a bibliography of Internet and other nonprint sources. Name, title, and subject indexes are also included. Each chapter begins with a brief analysis of chapter content. All entries are annotated and numbered. As a tool for librarians and scholars, this volume should prove to be quite valuable.
This reference tool is an invaluable and highly useful evaluative guide for selection and collection development for school and public libraries and for any college and university library that serves students and educators in the children's and young adult literature field.
This book is one of the essential tools needed to build a comprehensive collection. Recommended.
