The text and illustrations were inspired by the discovery of a large cache of notebooks and files and covers everything from perfumes to pyrotechnics. The editor hopes The Chymical Grimoire will inspire other chymists, especially those working in home laboratories, to make their own contributions and to leave a record of their work to the future.

The Skeptical Chymist is a practicing scientist of a certain age who has had a home laboratory since he was very young. His interests have ranged from chemistry to aquarium science and technology (aquariculture), to zoology. His interests and endeavors include aquaculture (fish farming), hydroponics, SCUBA diving, publishing, fossil hunting and collecting, scientific glass blowing, perfumery, wood working, stained glass, and library science and book collecting. He worked as a technical consultant in the chemical industry, environmental chemistry field, and in aquaculture, including as a technical advisor and witness in environmental legal proceedings and as a designer of systems for commercial fish farmers and public aquariums. The Skeptical Chymist has presented at numerous aquarium and aquaculture symposia, including the 2nd International Aquariology Congress held in Monaco in 1989. He was an editor for the Journal of Aquariculture & Aquatic Sciences and he manages a small personal family library. He is a family historian and genealogist. The Skeptical Chymist continues to explore the wonder of chymistry in his home laboratory. The editor of the Chymical Grimoire, John Farrell Kuhns, has compiled this laboratory guide for home chymists from the notebooks and files of the Skeptical Chymist. The practical lab recipes, including the synthesis of hard to find chymicals and reagents, guides to using lab apparatus and equipment, and demonstrations cover a broad range of topics from formulating perfumes to pyrotechnics. This compilation is designed to inspire other chymists to make their own contributions to chemistry and leave a record of their work for future scientists.
