When Elsbeth Waters visits the Fremont Fair, she meets the Crayon Crone, who reads her palm. She is told that something ominous will happen to her unless she finds direction in her life. Elsbeth interprets this as her death, and decides to avoid this danger by writing stories based on crayon names. The following year, she brings her first story to the Fair, but the Crayon Crone is not there, only a box that is labeled, "Crayon Box Mail." She drops her manuscript into a slot. The next year, she brings another story, and realized that only she can see the box...
