The Debt

Autor Esq Esq MR Herman D. Franck
en Limba Engleză Paperback
A handsome, but failed civil rights attorney and his beautiful, but clinically depressed Chinese wife meet, and as hapless lovers do, get married. Soon after, they suffer set back after set back, including the loss of her pregnancy at 8 months. The worst experience of Ce Ce's life was when the Doctor had to induce the birth of her stillborn child. She never got over it in a million years. On top of all of this, Adam's law office failed, and he was evicted from his office. The two begin to wonder why on earth all this bad luck has fallen upon them. If you have ever asked yourself "why is all this happening to me" you will connect with their plight. They decide to go to a psychologist, a scholarly Chinese man. He introduces them to the concept of hypnosis as a part of psychotherapy. They agree to undergo a past life regression under hypnosis, and are taken to see the lives they had lived before. They come back screaming as they learn the evil deeds they had done before. Back in the early part of the 1900s she was a male doctor living in the Northern Territories of Australia, and he was her wife. They convinced the Australian government to implement an official policy that has now become known as the "Stolen Generations" policy. Make no mistake about it; this policy was genocide, pure and simple. The white settlers of Australia believed at the time that the Aboriginals of Australia needed to be eliminated. This group of natives had lived there without a problem for about 50,000 years. The methods were not the gas chambers of Hitler, but genocide is genocide no matter how you do it. In this strange form of eliminating a race of people, the Australian government agreed with the doctor's recommendation of a genetic assimilation of the aboriginals into the white race. The method was straight forward: police would take the children of the aboriginals away from their families by force; take them to camps set up as a distribution hubs throughout the provinces of Australia, later redistribute them to various white families; cut off all communication between them and their parents; place them into white ranches; then force breed them with whites, and have hybrid white aboriginal children. Several generations later, perhaps 7 or 8, and the aboriginals would be gone. As farfetched as this may sound, historically speaking it really did happen. Our hapless lovers learn through hypnosis that they were the chief architects of this program. The psychologist explains to them that their current terrible luck is very much a case of a karmic debt, with a very obvious solution: they must pay the debt. To add to this problem, Ce Ce has learned she is pregnant. Will her new child suffer the same plight as her previous child and become a stillborn? There is no way she can suffer through that twice. She wants an abortion at the get go, but Adam says no way. He is fighting for his child, fighting for wife and family, and fighting to find a way to clear this debt and get on with their lives. How to pay this debt, a debt seemingly larger than the universe? The good doctor explains it in simple terms: you made this problem as two individuals; you can now solve this problem as two individuals. The way karma works is you may be born with a huge karmic debt, but you are also born with a corresponding huge karmic asset, a skill set that gives you the tools and ammunition to pay that debt. Adam looks into his true self and knows he was born with the mind and abilities of a civil rights attorney. He smiles as he tells the doctor, "I know exactly what to do." What unfolds is the story of how Adam and Ce Ce go forward to pay off their debt, save their baby, and begin the process of Australia's own recognition that what it did to the Aboriginals was a tragedy beyond words. Sorry doesn't fix it, but it is a start. The Debt will be repaid, with interest.
