Extracted from his own diaries this book describes what Gooch believed were his most important contributions to British engineering, particularly his work for the Great Western Railways and on ocean telegraphic communication. A contemporary of Brunel's, it was in fact the legendary figure who recommended Gooch for his first position as superintendent of the locomotive department of GWR. His diaries present a portrait of a hard working enthusiastic man.
