The Dog on the Bed: A Canine Alphabet

Autor Richard Telekey, Richard Teleky
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 30 sep 2011
The Dog on the Bed is an ideal introduction to the world of dogs ߝ to who they are, how we live with them, and how they have been represented in our culture. Using the classic form of the alphabet book ߝ the abecedarian ߝ Teleky explores fascinating aspects of the human/dog bond to show how it has defined our traditions and us as a species. We are human, he says, because of our dogs. Readers can start at the beginning, with Anthropomorphism, and go on the engaging thoughts about Childhood Dogs, Emotions, Fiction, Food, Gardens, Humour, Loyalty, Movies, Painting, Photography, Rescue Missions, Second Dogs, Veterinarians, War and Yapping, to end with a remembrance of the author’s beloved pug. Or they can jump in at a point of special interest. From the most recent ideas about canine evolution and animal rights to the way dogs have inspired musicians, animal behaviourists, writers of every genre and even entrepreneurs, Teleky’s reflections ߝ in 65 essays, accompanied by 20 black-and-white illustrations ߝ are never less than fascinating.  The Dog on the Bed is the prefect book for all dogs lovers, whether they are welcoming a puppy into the family, looking freshly at a familiar companion, or marking the passing of a treasured friend. Readers will enjoy comparing their personal experiences with Teleky’s, as his eloquent book leads us to a deeper understanding of our canine companions and to a richer appreciation of the bond shared by humans and dogs.

Recenzii

This beautifully written abecedarian book by poet and novelist Teleky (Humanities, York University, Toronto) will delight sophisticated readers who appreciate well-crafted, thoughtful essays about dogs. Moving from A to Z, Teleky covers, among others, anthropomorphism, death, fiction, gardens, intelligence, rescue missions, television, writers’ dogs, and concludes with Zoli (the author’s dearly departed pug). He eloquently examines aspects of the bond between dogs and humans in what appears like randomly selected but are in fact carefully chosen topics. The richness of dogs’ interior lives—in particular their devotion, affection, sense of smell, anxiety, and humor—provide fertile ground for the author’s speculations and theories. The title comes from a French proverb: there are two kinds of masters—those who admit that their dog sleeps on the bed and those who don’t.
Verdict: Literary dog lovers will want to curl up with their dog on the bed with this book.—Susan Riley, Mamaroneck P.L., NY  [LibraryJournal]
