The Elegance of an Unskilled Angel

Autor Jess Freher-Lyons
en Limba Engleză Paperback
Artists, poets and visionaries have heard voices since the beginnings of history. Some were called heretics, jailed, tried and burnt at the stake. Others became shamans and elders of their communities, sought after for their insight and wisdom. In our time, to hear voices is to court the judgement of psychiatrists and of literal-minded believers, despite the claim that their own sacred texts were spoken to the original scribes by God. What if instead of fearing the phenomena of muse in our time, we respectfully cultivated and redirected these intuitions as an alternative? Developing the creative talents and abilities of those who have otherwise been written off might provide surprising insights for the larger society. If one in a hundred could find their way to their greater gifts and learn to offer them freely, might this not be of significant value? It's worth exploring. Our main character, Percy, has been troubled by varied psychological maladies for years and arrives at a new psychologist's office in a new town, soon to be writing messages from a committee of angels, who call themselves Excalibur. His creative psychologist, Lily, is diligent in allowing Percy his process, listening and encouraging him freely by speaking of the Muse of ancient Greece and having him read his writings aloud, among other things. This continues until Lily's personal issues clash with Excalibur's insights and her professional boundaries become blurred. The angels Excalibur introduce a quirky King Arthur in the midst of this, also the Goddess Venus, even Jesus Christ to round out the schizophrenic's hall of fame, in tribute to the One Goddess and the One God, just for good measure. In the meantime, Percy meets a most compelling new friend, with angelic ideas of her own, who is so familiar they're quickly inspired to explore their deeper interests and obvious attraction. While the story is about allowing muse and intuition into our characters' thinking, it's also about bringing the muse to life in today's creativity and healing arts, while acknowledging her deep influence in the history of civilization. It's a quiet celebration of her very real availability in the present time.
