The major challenges facing South Asia to achieve sustainable development are investigated, using case studies and applying new points of view in economic thought about the connection between development and the environment. Notă biografică

MOHAMMAD ALAUDDIN is Senior Lecturer in Economics at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. He is a graduate of Rajshahi University, Bangladesh, The University of Adelaide, and The University of Newcastle (Australia). He has taught at Rajshahi University and The University of Melbourne. He has published widely on development and environmental issues in international journals including Applied Economics, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Development Studies, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, World Development. He co-authored (with C.A. Tisdell) The Green Revolution and Economic Development: The Process and Its Impact in Bangladesh.

CLEMENT ALLAN TISDELL is Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Economics at The University of Queensland, Australia. His previous positions include Professor of Economics at the University of Newcastle, NSW and Reader in Economics at The Australian National University. He has held visiting positions at many overseas institutions and has published widely on environmental economics and economic development. Previous books published by Macmillan include The Green Revolution and Economic Development (co-authored with Mohammad Alauddin) and Economic Development in the Context of China, also published in Chinese by the China Development Press, Beijing. He is a life member of the Calcutta-based International Institute of Development Studies and an Honorary Professor of the People's University of China. He has given lectures at Rajshahi University and Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, and in India.
