In this book, Ellison covers 120 types, or races, of the faeries from Brittany, England, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Scotland, and Wales. His descriptions are based on the folk-lore and fairy tales collected from among the people who interacted with the faeries on a daily basis in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
