A festival comes to the peaceful village of Maepole, bringing with it a fresh influx of joyous people and an aura of goodwill. Like all the village folk, Briley and Smokey are granted time to rest from their arduous daily chores.

And yet Briley's sense of peace is soon shattered when Lord Grey, the man who accuses her of killing his son, pays an unwelcome visit. Briley is uneasy and suspects foul play, but is reassured by the presence of the hunters, the able men guarding the village and keeping everyone safe.

But when a mysterious illness sweeps through the village and strikes down all in its path, Briley is left floundering for the cause. She seeks out Ghroda, the forest spirit, who gives her a dire warning: "Many shall fall, and one shall fall the furthest..."
