The Newfoundland schooner captain captures a German submarine, and then must decide the fate of the crew of children that a failing German Navy has sent out in a battered submarine, under the command of a tired old man with a history of mental disorders caused, not by the conflict of war, but the issues of the heart, in a last desperate attempt to sink Allied ships and delay the inevitable collapse of the German War Machine and the destruction of the Third Reich. Kurt and Pius must reconcile their difference and become allies. Many characters and their stories form the backdrop for this complex relationship. All the elements of human conflict, love, loss and salvation move the story line over the years from 1913 - 1945 as we follow the strange story of antagonists in conflict who become friends in need. A relationship that outlasted war and depravation, reaffirming the the very best of the human condition...love of life and respect for our fellow man.
