Extras
This book is the fifteenth in a series of volumes sponsored by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees showcasing the history of The Ohio State University. The first book in the series is a general history of the university overall, while the other volumes each focus on a particular university president and what happened at Ohio State during his or her administration. This volume focuses on the second administration of Gordon Gee, who served as president between 2007 and 2013. There was actually a first Gee administration between 1990 and 1997; Malcolm Baroway wrote a wonderful chronicle of those years.
My approach to the book was thematic; it is organized around major events, developments, and successes of the university. The book is not a chronological summary of events that occurred during the second Gee administration. I also took some liberties with the time span covered by this book. Although Gee was president between 2007 and 2013, in many instances I went further back in time prior to his return and in some cases noted developments in the administration of his successor Michael Drake. My major reason for going further back in time was the recognition that the beginning and end dates of a particular administration are arbitrary constraints in discussing and analyzing university events. Instead, there is a broader history that shapes future developments, and to truly appreciate what has happened at the university, some knowledge of that history is essential.
