Fifteen year-old Mae is all alone in the world after her father succumbs to the flu that has killed most of the people on earth. When she finds a letter after his death telling her she has family that she never knew about, she knows that she has to try and find them. More surprising than that is the fact that her dad was convinced that she will inherit magic powers on her sixteenth birthday. Mae sets out on a dangerous journey looking for her family - and answers. Is there really such a thing as magic, or was the letter written by a delusional father that was on his deathbed? Armed with nothing more than a strange box and a stray puppy, Mae sets out across the state to find the truth.
