THE GOOD NEWS AS LUKE TELLS IT and WHAT THE APOSTLES DID are two volumes of a complete work written by Saint Luke, who was himself a traveling companion of Saint Paul. The first volume describes how God's promises to Israel in the Old Testament have been fulfilled through Jesus the Anointed King. The second volume describes how the salvation promised to Israel has been fulfilled in the Church that has been commissioned by Jesus the Anointed King, and extended to the Gentiles as well as to the Jews. Luke is presenting a case. His case is that the ministry and teaching of the Church is an ongoing reality of salvation history made known through Jesus. The Church is not only commissioned by Jesus, but the Church is led by Apostles. The Apostles are a clear link to Jesus. Those who were commissioned by the Apostles are commissioned in a line that stretches back to Jesus. In addition to the human structure of the Church, and the teachings of the witnesses who were with Jesus from the time of His baptism to His resurrection, the Church is also guided, informed, and led by the Holy Spirit, who confirms the teachings and mission of the Apostles by working miracles.
