Growing up on a sheep station on New Zealand's South Island, he learns his values from his parents and a thirst for travel from his teacher at the one-room schoolhouse he attends. His travel lust is only piqued by joining the Royal New Zealand Air Force where, during his twenty years of service, he has the unique opportunity to visit Antarctica and the United Kingdom.

Further life adventures include farming and working in the New Zealand venison industry, traveling throughout the British Isles while working in England, and embarking on a fascinating voyage to East Africa that culminates in a visit to a village in the Masai Mara. Eventually Gilkison makes a move to Australia that entails a tour around Queensland and the Northern Territory in his Land Cruiser and caravan.
