The Halal Food Handbook
Autor Y Al–Teinazen Limba Engleză Hardback – 26 feb 2020
A unique handbook providing a set of good practice standards for both producers and consumers of Halal food
This accessible, authoritative book covers all aspects of Halal from its origins through to how we expect Halal to develop in the coming years. It explains what Halal is, where it came from, how it is practiced, and by whom. In addition to putting Halal in a religious and cultural context, the book provides practical standards for those working in the Halal trade. It explains why there are so many different interpretations of Halal and why this needs to be resolved if international trade is to be developed.
Each chapter in The Halal Food Handbook is written by leading experts in their particular field of study. The first one discusses how regulatory bodies have failed to stem the miss selling and adulteration of Halal foods. The next chapters cover the slaughter process and issues around good practice. The book then looks at regulators--covering Sharia law, UK national laws, and the EU--and outlines the legal framework for enforcing the law. It also compares and contrasts different types of religious slaughter for faith foods; examines attempts to set an international standard for trade; and discusses pork adulteration in Halal foods. The final chapter covers other aspects of Halal, including cosmetics, tourism, lifestyle, and banking, and finishes with a look at what the future holds for Halal.

Primary MarketAt the recent Halal Congress Middle East, a two–day conference held in Saudi Arabia into business opportunities linked to Halal, is was estimated that the global Halal industry is worth $2.7 trillion and is growing more than 20 per cent annually. It is estimated that 1.6 billion consumers worldwide buy Halal with numbers growing as people convert to Islam.
According to the most recent census there has been a significant increase in the number of Muslims in the UK rising from 1.6 million in 2001 to 2.7 million in 2011. Muslims make up a significant proportion of some communities. In Tower Hamlets 36% of the population is Muslim, in Newham it is 24%, Blackburn 19%, Bradford 16% and Birmingham 14%.
There is currently a need for a book that outlines standards within the Halal trade. All Halal food producers will have a particular interest in this book because inconsistencies within countries and between countries pose a major obstacle to business expansion. Food scientists and technicians required to comply with Muslim law will also be interested. It is also aimed at practitioners within the industry including people who run abattoirs and the larger retailers.
The book will also be aimed at institutions that cater to the needs of Muslim communities such as hospitals, schools, businesses, prisons and other institutions. It is also aimed at practitioners within the industry including people who run abattoirs and the larger retailers. Halal is also an issue that regulators need to be aware of. There are degree courses in environmental health, trading standards and food science along with postgraduate courses across the country that will cover Halal as part of their food safety training. Relevant staff within the Food Standards Agency, European Food Safety Authority, European Commission, Trading Standards Institute, Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Muslim consumer groups and Mosques should also have copies.
Secondary Market
International conformity of the Halal standards is of great concern across the globe because of the need to resolve issues around international trade. The issues being faced in the UK are common in all other countries dealing with Halal. As a result regular world conferences are held to discuss issues around Halal. We believe there is an international market for such a book amongst overseas academics, food producers, retailers, regulators and certifying authorities.
