The Impact of Nazism – New Perspectives on the Third Reich and Its Legacy

Autor Alan E. Steinweis, Daniel E. Rogers
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 aug 2007
The consequences of Germany’s twelve-year Nazi regime continue to reverberate and to spark debate among scholars and the general public. In this volume leading scholars present provocative essays probing the nature, history, and aftermath of the Nazi regime, including its connections to the Federal Republic of Germany after the war. The essays address the nature of Nazism as reflected in contemporary perceptions of Nazi Germany in the United States; the origins and character of fascism; the many forms of antisemitism; German scholars’ efforts to promote persecution in the Third Reich; the role of ethnic Germans in the anti-Jewish and anti-Slavic policies of the Reich; the actions of German police in the occupation of eastern Europe and in the Holocaust; Hitler’s style of leadership; the nazification of the German military high command; and the politics surrounding the memory of Nazism and the Holocaust after 1945.

The Impact of Nazism employs diverse approaches, exploits a variety of new and long-available sources, and asks new questions, making clear the profound connections between the Nazis and the world that survived them.

"This illuminating collection of thoughtful and well-written essays is a most welcome publication. The contributions consistently meet high standards for clarity, cogency, and conviction while ranging widely over the thematic territory encompassed by the work's ambitious title."—Peter Hayes, author of Industry and Ideology: IG Farben in the Nazi Era

"Provocative and illuminating, making this an important addition to libraries on Nazism, German history and the Holocaust."—Jewish Book World

“All of the essays in this book are marked by solid, original research and, as the title promises, new perspectives on the Nazi regime and its legacy.”—German Studies Review

The Impact of Nazism is an important book for a number of reasons, no the least of which is the high level of scholarship…. There is no doubt that the essays highlighted here add new insight into persistent and vexing questions about the place of the Third Reich in German history, the nature and functioning of the Nazi state, and the development and impact of population, racial, and foreign policy…. There is an essay here for virtually everyone.”—Hilary Earl, H-Net Reviews

“The book will interest experts in the specific fields it addresses. It will also give the general reader and undergraduate student an excellent introduction to important debates on Nazi Germany and its legacy.”—David F. Crew, Central European History
