From humble beginnings came great things. Born in outback South Australia, a young George Hubert Wilkins set sail for England and a job in the new medium of motion pictures. The world opened up for Wilkins as he worked as a cinematographer and journalist. Constantly facing danger, as a World War I photographer he captured some of the most iconic images of war and was twice awarded the Military Cross for bravery under fire. His daring would take him places most people would never dream of. He would become a spy in the Soviet Union, an explorer and a chronicler of the planet and its life forms that would do Vasco da Gama and Sir David Attenborough proud. He explored both Poles and accompanied Sir Ernest Shackleton on his final expedition, led a ground-breaking natural history quest in Australia, and was knighted in 1928 for his pioneering aviation and navigation achievements. Yet more astounding feats would follow and his death-defying exploits aboard the submarine Nautilus would become legendary.
