On 9 October each year Chief Inspector William Wisting takes out the files on Katarina Haugen, who disappeared more than two decades before. Each and every year he looks at the papers from the unsolved case and visits her husband, Martin, who over the years has gone from prime suspect to good friend. But this year, his house stands empty; Martin Haugen is also missing.
That same day Adrian Stiller, an investigator from Oslo, comes to see Wisting. He believes that the kidnap case he's working on has ties to Haugen. He soon puts Wisting in an impossible position - one where he is made to act as bait to bring in a man who has become one of his most trusted companions.
