”The Kingdom of Back” is a book I adored. Marie Lu has a charming style to describe, the nets of the story catch you and you feel trapped in this magical and... sad world. Because beyond the author's imagination, the fictional (which were born in the novel) and dramatic moments that the protagonist, Nannerl, goes through, the story is true. It is a story about a girl who had an extraordinary talent, but who was born in a society that did not let the girls fly, but held them captive in a cage of an already written destiny. "The Kingdom of Back" is the story of Mozart's sister, Maria Anna Mozart, who showed an amazing skill in music from an early age, but also of her brother, with whom she had a beautiful childhood. ”I am afraid of being forgotten. Only the worthy are made immortal.” No one has forgotten you, Nannerl, nor will they. As Hyacinth told you, you wanted immortality and you got it, even if your music, under your name, did not survive. Fairness wasn't your friend, you were deprived of fame after you grew up, you didn't understand why your father didn't truly recognize your talent, your mother didn't tell you the cruel truth, why society couldn't see you like your brother, of whose extraordinaire talent you were amazed too. The story you have never heard is about the sister who composed beside him. She is not the stardust but the steady wick, the one who burns low and quiet. She writes when others do not see. By morning, none would know that her flame had ever been there. Her music is the ghost in the air. You know it because it reminds you of something you cannot quite grasp. The novel begins with Nannerl's childhood, her potential, her brother, Wolferl, which plays a major role in the story, and a dream that introduces her to a magical world, where trees grow upside-down, where the sand on the beach is white and a boy more beautiful than any other appears and tells her that he hears her, that he can fulfill her wish, if she will help him too. Over the years, Nannerl and Wolferl will often meet Hyacinth, hear his music and whispers, and the girl will look forward to it because next to Hyacinth, she's the chosen one, his Fraulein. ”Hyacinths are the harbinger of spring and life, but they are also poisonous.” And Nannerl fights both in her life and in the magical world, overcomes obstacles, rejoices, falls in love, cries, travels in a world of music and evolves into a charming young woman with a sacred imagination. I can't tell you how much fantasy and how much reality it is, but I saw beyond the fantastic world in the book until I only saw a girl who wanted to be admired, to be appreciated, to be remembered. *In many historical documents it has been written about her and her talent, even her father (I did not see him as an antagonist in the book, but only as a respectable man who wanted to conform to society, even if he made unforgivable mistakes, even if he said that All men are villains.) knew she was a talented musician, even her brother. Historically speaking, leaving aside the fictional action of the book, her compositions did not survive, but some scholars have noted that it is possible that Nannerl's hand infiltrated through Mozart's works (however, it is only a speculation but some think that a work which was initially attributed to Wolfgang, might be in fact Nannerl's music). As a child, she and her brother traveled around Europe on several tours to delight the world with music, but when she grew up, she could not go because she would not have been respected as a young woman. She never published her compositions because she could not do so and so a beautiful talent perished in the mists of history. And maybe many others did. But still... she was remembered.
