Magic is a socio-religious phenomenon which has long, well-established roots in Banten Muslim society. It is traceable from many literatures that describe the uniqueness of Bantenese's culture. Debus, the cultivation of invulnerability to fire and sharp metal objects, is the most conspicuous representative of the magical tradition in Banten since the sultanate period up to the present, besides other magical practices. The existence of debus Banten and other kinds of magical practices in Banten has strengthened the reputation of Banten as 'a haven of magical sciences'. These magical practices are still regarded important for Bantenese people, especially who live in the villages to solve their practical problems in their social life. This book, furthermore, provides description of magical practices of Muslim society of Banten, Indonesia. Kyai hikmah or ahli hikmah (Islamic religious figures), jawara (local strongmen), and dukun (traditional curers or shamans) are three Bantenese figures who are believed having and practicing magical power for helping to solve practical problems of the society. Therefore, they have high and respectable positions in Banten society.

Notă biografică

Ayatullah Humaeni is a lecturer of Anthropology and Language Structure at The State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) "Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin" Banten, Indonesia. He is also active as a researcher in a Reseacrh Institution (Lembaga Penelitian) and Laboratorium Bantenologi IAIN "SMH" Banten.His major interest is religion and local culture
