The Madea Factory

Autor Ezekiel J. Walker
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 18 mai 2014
The Madea Factory will address many topics related to African American stereotypes and images which are portrayed in the movie industry, largely by the most recognizable and profitable black filmmaker of all time, Tyler Perry. Since African Americans began performing and entertaining nationally over one hundred years ago, there has been a division between the mainstream viewing public and the African American audience, from which these mannerisms and behaviors are allegedly derived from. This book provides clarity to why the gap continues to exist today and how it can best be overcome. Walker demonstrates to the reader that in order for them to truly understand the messages and propaganda being presented to them, they must first be knowledgeable of America's film and television history, along with learning how those themes have changed over time. Walker achieves this by noting legendary 20th century television and film personalities such as Stepin Fetchit, Paul Robeson, Hattie McDaniel and Lena Horne in order to comprehensively illustrate the persons who have paved the way for blacks in Hollywood today. Past black directors and their films will also be discussed as I provide a quick history lesson in the ebbs and flows of black images on film and the challenges that have always existed for us to present an image of ourselves to the masses without compromising our integrity, finances, and relevance. Spike Lee's contribution to film will also be reviewed as he is the only other modern example of a black director in charge of his own visions and capable of creating films of his choosing on a frequent basis and large scale. The Madea Factory will most importantly challenge the reader to honestly look within themselves and at black culture to determine whether the images presented to them are worth their continued support and admiration. It is not a debate over the accuracy of Perry's caricatures and motifs, but rather it points out that because of these messages, Perry is continuing to propagate cultural fallacies so frequently and with such universal appeal, that they are often accepted without question or contemplation
